Preserving recorded musical heritage requires expertise, specialised equipment and sustainable resources.
Established in Geneva in 2013 and recognised as being of public benefit, the United Music Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving, enhancing and facilitating the transmission of this heritage.
It uses its technical resources and specialist expertise to support archive holders and institutions.
Preserving recorded musical heritage — and, more broadly, sound heritage — remains a challenge that is too often underestimated, even though some media deteriorate irreversibly.
Most of the work carried out by the United Music Foundation is undertaken in the interest of heritage preservation and cannot be financed solely through income generated by projects. Maintaining the infrastructure, specialised equipment and expertise required to preserve archives entails ongoing costs.
Your support makes it possible, in very practical terms, to treat fragile media before they become unplayable, to fund preservation projects, to keep essential equipment in working order, and to preserve the expertise required to operate it.
Over the years, the United Music Foundation has preserved thousands of recordings from public and private collections, including archives from the Grand Théâtre de Genève (Geneva Opera House), the Musée d’ethnographie de Genève, the Musée d’art et d’histoire de Genève and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
The Foundation’s work has also been recognised with two national awards, and its expertise has been the subject of a scientific article in the ARSC Journal, an international reference in the field of sound archives.
Furthering this research, our project manager, David Hadzis, has co-authored, alongside international researchers and specialists, a scientific article on the mechanisms of magnetic tape degradation, published in npj Heritage Science, a Nature Portfolio journal.
This research helps improve our understanding of magnetic tape deterioration and informs the methods used to preserve recorded sound.

The United Music Foundation is a non-profit foundation under private law and is tax-exempt. It is supervised by the ASFIP (Supervisory Authority for Foundations and Pension Institutions).
Donations to the Foundation may be tax-deductible, subject to the conditions and limits set out in applicable law.
